Traditional Shotokan Karate

South Africa

“Shotokan is more than just kicks, punches and the delivery thereof. This type of karate focuses on self defence without weapons. It has been proven time and again that karate holds several advantages for the younger generation. This includes better concentration, loyalty, builds character and discipline, which in turn results in better self control and better academic results.”

~ Sensei Henry Van Niekerk

7th Dan

Henry van Niekerk

Sensei Henry van Niekerk’s dreams to promote karate in the region were shattered after being involved in a microlight accident in 2002. He sustained several bone fractures and could not practice karate until recently.

As a qualified karate and Taebo instructor he had already trained 51 Springboks in his career and has represented South Africa in Japan, America, Holland and Germany. He was also 2nd in command of Shotokan Karate in South Africa under Shihian Ben Gouws for a period of 15 years. Sensei Henry van Niekerk has his 1st Dan in Judo and 7th Dan in Karate and is a high quality coach.
